Eva James Davis Wherry 95 widow of R. Augustus (Gus) Wherry was welcomed by her family in heaven on Wednesday October 22 2014. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am Saturday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mickey Fisher assisted by the Rev. James Williams. Interment will be held in the family plot at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry. She was born January 21 1919 in Newberry a daughter of the late Munson P. and Janie Thomasson Davis. Mrs. Wherry graduated from Newberry High School in 1936 and from Newberry College with a business administration degree in 1938. She began her career with Newberry Insurance and Realty Co. (later Purcells) in Newberry and she worked for 12 years with Cudd and Coan Underwriters in Spartanburg. Later she worked for the S.C. Department of Insurance and Ellen Hines Smith Girls Home where she retired in 1989. She was a woman of great faith and actively supported both churches she attended during her lifetime. At Central United Methodist Church in Newberry she was lead teacher in the Primary Department. At Trinity United Methodist Church in Spartanburg she was a former Sunday School teacher in the Primary Department president of Juanita Waring Circle and secretary of John Nicholson Sunday School Class. For over 15 years she cooked for senior citizens lunches at Trinity and became known affectionately by all as "The Cake Lady." She was the last of her generation the family matriarch. She spent a lifetime fussing and caring for everyone in her world regularly writing the newspaper and the president when she had something to say. She loved her garden and generously shared plants with family and friends throughout the state. Indeed her life was marked by a generosity of spirit and example of faith to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Mrs. Wherry is survived by daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Mac MacDonald of Newberry; grandson and granddaughter-in-law James and Melanie Lewismoss of Columbia; grandson Matthew Moss of Portland OR; granddaughters Katherine Moss of Columbia and Rebecca MacDonald of NYC; great-grandsons David Xavier Lewismoss and Alexander Archer Lewismoss of Columbia. She was pre-deceased by granddaughter Aimee Elizabeth Moss. Mrs. Wherry was also predeceased by sisters Margaret Davis Carlisle Annie Laurie Davis Graham Janie Davis Warren and brother Neal Davis. All of her family including nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews wish her a well-deserved peace. Pallbearers will be Robert Davis Henry Summer David Dorroh Rob Davis David Warren Biff Riebe Heber Long Jim Carlisle Danny Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be members of John Nicholson Sunday School Class.
