Evelyn Stone Veronee, 94, of Simpsonville, passed into the Kingdom of Heaven on December 11, 2016, with her daughter and granddaughter by her side. She was a kind and loving woman who set an example for everyone who met her. She never knew how many lives she touched. Born in Newberry on April 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Harry O'Merle and Clara Wicker Stone. She was predeceased by her brothers, Harry O'Merle Stone, Jr. and Maxcy Stone, and her sisters, Mary Frances (Stone) Kunkle and Edna (Stone) Summer. Evelyn graduated from Newberry College with a degree in education at a time when few women worked outside the home and even fewer held a degree. She had a long and successful career teaching the youth of South Carolina, beginning in Clinton, SC and ending at St. Peter's Catholic School in Columbia, SC. She left such an impression on her students that many of them kept in contact with her through the years. Nothing brought her more joy than receiving a note from a former student. She spent her later working years as the Director of the Film and Book Library at the Department of Mental Health in Columbia, SC. She retired in 1984 in order to spend more time with her newborn grandson. Although Evelyn first met her husband, Charles Copeland Veronee, at Newberry College, they did not meet again until years later when they reconnected by chance in Charleston, SC. They married in 1953 and were together for 63 years. Cope passed away in June of this year. Evelyn is reunited with him just 6 months later. Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne Veronee Keith and Colonel Edmond Keith, USAF (ret.); three grandchildren, EM1 (USN) Barry Keith and his wife Ashley Keith, Matthew Copeland Keith, and Sarah Keith; and her great-grandchildren, Liam and Kaylyn Keith. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss her dearly. The funeral will be held at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry, SC on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 3:30 pm with burial to follow at Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:30 – 3:00 pm prior to the service. The family requests that donations be made to Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia or to Newberry College.
