Evie L. McCarty, 82, of Blythewood, died Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Blue Ridge in the Fields Nursing Home. Born on January 28, 1935 in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Mertick and Addlaide Knotts Stewart. Mrs. McCarty was of the Baptist Faith. She worked many years as a waitress and restaurant manager in Columbia, as well as raising her children and grandchildren. Evie enjoyed Flea Markets, fishing with her grandchildren, and the beach. She is survived by her children, James Ray Swearingen, Sr. (Peggy) of Blair, George "Bubba" Swearingen (Carol) of Hopkins, Melody Murphy (Mike) of Columbia, and Frances "Frankie" Hazewinkle (Jan) of Ridgeway; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Snowball. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James A. McCarty; son, John T. "Tommy" Swearingen, Sr.; and grandson, John T. "Johnny" Swearingen, Jr. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC, conducted by Laypersons Mark Wyatt and James R. Swearingen, Jr. The family thanks the staff at Blue Ridge in the Fields Nursing Home for their exceptional and loving care.
