Fay Whitfield Harrelson 95 died on Friday September 23 2011 at the Heritage at Lowman Home. Born in Hookerton North Carolina on July 22 1916 she was the daughter of the late Lillian Bessie Moore and Charles Bryant Whitfield. Mrs. Harrelson moved to Columbia South Carolina in her early 20's to pursue a degree in cosmetology. While riding her bicycle to work one day she fell in front of the home of T.J. Harrelson who was beginning to start Harrelson Roofing and Paint Company. What began as a small biking accident turned into a lifelong relationship. T.J. and Fay married on September 5 1940 at Washington Street Methodist Church. Fay helped T.J. turn his fledging business into one that was well known and respected in the Columbia community. The Harrelsons moved to 5242 Lakeshore Drive in Columbia where they built their dream home. It was here that they raised their three daughters. Mrs. Harrelson along with her husband was one of the first families to begin Trenholm Road Methodist Church. Mrs. Harrelson was active in the Womens Bible Studies where she took on leadership roles. She and her family spent their summer months at Garden City Beach where she supported her husband as he helped with starting Garden City Chapel. Mrs. Harrelsons daughters are very proud of their mother. Twice she battled breast cancer and twice she beat it. Her daughters see her as not only a wonderful Godly mother but a fighter with a servants heart. She encouraged many other women that were battling cancer. Mrs. Harrelson loved to play bridge and was in many bridge clubs with her husband as well as her many girl friends. You could often see her playing golf at Forest Lake Country Club with her friends. She loved to joke about her high golf scores. The family was so blessed to have her loving caregivers Dorothy Dot Hart and Larryittia SheaShea Walters by her side until her passing. Survivors are her three daughters Fay (Jimmy) Halford of DeBordieu Colony Georgetown South Carolina Thaddea (Jim) Pitts of Kona Hawaii and Ann (Dan) Douglas of Chapin South Carolina. Her grandchildren include Andie Halford Robinson Christiana Pitts Dr. James C. Pitts Angela Douglas Hood Ali Douglas Daniel Douglas Jr.; and 5 great grandchildren. Mrs. Harrelson was predeceased by three sisters and one brother and will be greeted in heaven by her infant daughter Gayle her grandson Daniel and her husband of over 65 years "T.J." Graveside funeral services for family and friends was conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Carl Clary officiating.
