Obituary

Flavel Scott (Scottie) Elliott Jr. 71 of Newberry died Saturday November 26 2005 at Newberry Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Miller with visitation prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. in the Henry Hall of the Church. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery Newberry.Mr. Elliott was born October 1 1934 in Asheville North Carolina son of the late Dr. Flavel Scott Elliott and the late Rosalie Conn Elliott. Scottie moved to Newberry at age 12 and was a graduate of Newberry High School. He grew to become one of Newberry's best-known citizens. He was a life-long member of Central United Methodist Church the Chesley Cannon Men's Sunday School class and United Methodist Men. He served as an usher and in recent years Scottie was very proud to be responsible for opening and securing the Church buildings for services. He was a loyal Church member and participated in many Church Activities.Scottie was an avid sports fan and attended virtually every Newberry High and Newberry College sports event to cheer for his teams. He traveled with the teams and was recognized by both schools for his loyal support as the number one fan. In addition to being a fixture at most games he was a life member of the Newberry High School Bulldog Booster Club and the Newberry College Indian Club. He played city and church league softball for years and followed all sports intently. He was known for his evening calls to friends offering a play-by-play description of the most recent sporting event.Scottie served his community as a member of the Newberry Civitan Club which had honored him as Civitan of the year. He also served as Assistant Sergeant at Arms of the South Carolina Civitan organization. He loved to attend the annual Civitan conventions where he was welcomed by many friends. Special appreciation is owed to Bryan Bobo and Jim Seeley who assisted Scottie in travel to many of these meetings.He was a charter member of the Newberry Historical Society and a life member of the Sons of the American Revolution.Scottie was a loyal friend who always took time to phone his friends nightly to say hello and offer a sports report or a reminder of some future event. He is survived by extended family and by many friends who will miss his nightly calls but will remember them as constant gestures of his love and concern. Scottie's friends wish to express much gratitude to the staff and doctors of Newberry Memorial Hospital for their sincere compassion and excellent care during his illness.Active pallbearers were John Paul Whitaker Jackie Swindler Tony Powell John Rucker Tim Medlin Tommy Johnson Bill Harvey Bubba Griffith and Lee Foster.Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Chesley Cannon Men's Bible Class United Methodist Men and Ushers of Central United Methodist Church.
