Obituary

Frances Harley Brown 98 of Manning SC died late Wednesday evening September 25 2013 at Tuomey Hospital Sumter S.C. following an extended illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday September 28 2013 at Manning United Church in Manning SC. The family will receive friends at the residence 310 North Meadow Drive Manning SC on Saturday September 27 2013 from 5 to 7 pm. Born September 14 1915 in Orangeburg S.C. she was the daughter of the late Irvin Sylvanus Harley and Fannie Olivia Ruple Harley. She was a graduate of Orangeburg H.S. and attended Lander College. In 1937 Frances and her late husband Travis Brown Sr. co-founded and operated Browns 5 & 10 in Manning. She was a member of the Manning United Methodist Church and former teacher of the Nelle Wells Sunday School Class and leader of the Nelle Wells Circle of the Church. Frances was a charter member and past president of the Azalea Garden Club and a member of numerous bridge clubs. She was predeceased by a daughter Frances Elizabeth Betsi Brown and a daughter-in-law Sue McKnight Brown. Survivors are a son Travis Brown Jr.of Manning; 2 daughters Cynthia Brown Whitaker and her husband John Paul of Newberry and Cheri Lyn Brown of Cherry Grove; 5 Grandchildren Frances Brown King Francie Travis M. Brown III and his wife Patty Elizabeth Martin Capps Laura Helen Whitaker Mangum and her husband Grier and Mary Frances Whitaker Northcutt and her husband Vince 4 Great Grandchildren Travis M. Brown IV Tripp Susan King Orck and her husband Joey Frances Caroline King Caroline and Whit Mangum. Also a number of Nieces and Nephews. The family would like to extend their appreciation to special friends Mellissa Dorothy Mary Lee Odessa and Pam for the love and excellent care provided to our Mother during her illness. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the building Fund at Manning United Methodist Church P.O. Box 68 Manning SC 29102. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
