He attended his beloved PS 87, briefly attended the New York City High School of Music and Art, and graduated from Amityville High School in Copiague, Long Island, NY.

He was a long-time member of About Face, a fellowship of artists working at life drawing and portraiture.
In 1992 he moved to Newberry, SC, where he and his wife restored an historic home and operated the Barklin House Bed & Breakfast for 16 years. Franklin served his adopted hometown of Newberry for 11 years as a member of the Architectural Review Board and while his health permitted, he and his wife were active in many aspects of the community.
He also loved his 1938 Buick coupe, and belonged to two antique car clubs, enjoying the camaraderie and driving around Newberry. During these "retirement years", he and his wife also traveled widely in the US and enjoyed trips to the United Kingdom, Belgium, France and Switzerland, as well as a tour of China in 2007. In 2009 they purchased an historic commercial building in Newberry and restored it to include a loft apartment, which has been his residence.
