Fred V. Lester 86 of 1625 Clarkson Ave. Newberry died Sunday January 14 2007 at the Lexington Medical Center.He was born on Nov. 27 1920 in Newberry a son of the late Allen H. and Pauline Hawkins Lester. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a graduate of Newberry College and of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a professor at Newberry College for 35 years where he served as chairman of the Department of Business Administration and Economics from 1981 to 1990. In 1976 he was honored as the Professor of the Year by the college's alumni association and he received the Thomas E. Epting Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award in 1997.When he retired in 1991 he was named Professor of Accounting Emeritus. He was presented an Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science Degree from Newberry College in 2006 and the College also honored him with the Sesquicentennial Medal of Honor. He established his own accounting firm in 1962 and was still active as an accountant and as the treasurer of the Rosemont Cemetery Association.He was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church where he served as the church treasurer for 57 years; was a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years and was a choir member. He was a member of Amity Masonic Lodge # 87; served on the Newberry County Disabilities and Special Needs Board; and had 39 years of service to the Newberry College Men's basketball team. He and his wife were recognized by the University of South Carolina through the of a naming a USC Chair of Education in their honor.Mr. Lester is survived by his wife Frances Wise Lester of Newberry; a sister Joyce L. Johnson of LaGrange GA; and a number of special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters Thelma Dominick and Bonnie Culclasure and three brothers Vernon Lester Willie Frank Lester and Jimmy Lester.Funeral services were conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Kathy Harris. Entombment was in Newberry Memorial GardensVisitation was from 5:30 to 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. The family was at the residence 1625 Clarkson Ave.Active pallbearers were Terry Dominick Ricky Culclasure Jimmy Lester Alfred Dominick Timothy Carroll and Mark Cronk.
