Obituary

George Herman Johnson 78 of Newberry died Friday June 17 2011 at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. Herman was born on September 9 1932 in Silverstreet the son of the late George Andrew Johnson and the late Eva Mae Pitts Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Colony Lutheran Church where he belonged to the Friendship Group and worked with the Lutheran Men in Missions. He served in the US Army and retired from the City of Newberry. Known by many as Bird Dog or Mr. Green Jeans Herman was an avid sports fan including playing coaching and umpiring either on the field or from the bleachers - softball games. Mr. Johnson is survived by three sisters Rebecca Bundrick of Silverstreet Linda Rowe and Alice Moore both of Newberry; brother Olin Johnson and wife Doris of Newberry; sister-in-law Gerry Johnson of Greenwood; and many nieces nephews great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Frick Johnson; sister Sarah Nell Taylor; and brother William L. Billy Johnson. Graveside services were conducted at 11:00 AM Monday at the Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jerry Trantham. The family was at the home of Alice Moore 2511 Harrington Street Newberry and did receive friends on Sunday from 5:30pm 7:00pm at Whitaker Funeral Home.
