George Edward Mitchell passed away on October 24, 2026, at the age of 91, in Lexington, SC. He was surrounded, as in life, by adoring family and friends who reflect his legacy of faith and love.
He is survived by Connie Z. Mitchell, his beloved wife and constant companion in both work and adventure for over six decades.
George was born November 26, 1934, in Washington, DC, to George E. Mitchell Sr. and Helen W. Mitchell.
After coming to faith in Jesus in his mid-twenties, George took classes at a Bible college while working for the fire department. Larger than life in many ways, he excelled in roles children dream of taking on when they grow up: military serviceman, airline pilot, helicopter pilot, firefighter, undercover detective, deputy sheriff, and cattle rancher.
After he retired from a career with the Metro-Dade Police Department (1968-1993), George and Connie moved from Florida to South Carolina, where she served as Dean of Education for Columbia International University. A favorite with faculty and students, George supported Connie in what he described as his favorite job of all—"carrying the teacher’s books.” Above all, he loved being with her.
He pursued an eclectic assortment of hobbies. George and Connie shared a passion for travel, especially cruises and road trips. Other favorite activities included skeet shooting, visiting Disney, attending church, studying his Bible, and finding the perfect restaurant. A lifelong learner and avid reader, he was rarely without a book, crossword, or sudoku puzzle.
George’s devotion to family and friends was evident in his focused attention and genuine care for those around him. He will be particularly remembered for his desire for others to know Jesus, his generous heart, his wise advice, his excellent storytelling, and his signature hats.
The memorial service will be conducted by Senior Pastor Michael Hull on Saturday, November 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapin Baptist Church, 950 Old Lexington Hwy., Chapin, SC 29036. Visitation begins one hour before the service, at 10:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the College of Education at Columbia International University, 7435 Monticello Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.
