Obituary

George Raymond Whitey Wessinger Sr. 92 of Chapin husband of the late Callie Mae Wessinger died Sunday July 20 2014 at The Heritage at Lowman in White Rock. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday July 21 2014 at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church of Chapin. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday July 22 in Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church by the Rev. Ginger Litman-Koon. Interment did follow in Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery. Mr. Wessinger was born on January 18 1922 in Chapin a son of the late Pearl Derrick and Arthur D. Wessinger. He was a US Army veteran of World War II a member of the Little Mountain Masonic Lodge and a 2004 inductee into the Town of Chapin Hall of Fame. He worked for Liberty Life Insurance and for Central Chevrolet in Columbia. He sold many cars to the folks in the Chapin area and in 1966 he sold to the Town of Chapin its first fire wagon. In 1970 he started Chapin Furniture Company now known as Wessingers Appliance operated by his son Delbert and granddaughter Lisa. He provided jobs for family members and others throughout the community. In 1972 he was instrumental in the formation of the Chapin Merchants Association and was very involved with the startup of the Chapin Medical Practice. Mr. Wessinger is also known for his Barbecue that was especially popular on the Fourth of July. He loved gardening and supplied many neighbors with fresh vegetables from his garden. He also enjoyed fishing and NASCAR racing and every now and then a little bit of Heavenly Hill. A devoted Christian he was a member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church where he previously served on Church Council and as a choir member. He was a business pioneer who will be remembered as a loving husband father grandfather brother neighbor and friend. He is survived by his children George R. Wessinger Jr. (Tess) of Chapin Linda W. Fulmer (Johnny) of Prosperity Glenn Wessinger (Martha) Delbert Wessinger (Gloria) Von Wessinger (Dianne) and Loretta W. Griffin (Tom) all of Chapin; grandchildren Scott Wessinger Ronnie Wessinger (Chris) Stephen Wessinger (Lacey) Rusty Fulmer (Marie) Mitchell Fulmer (Bethany) Wesley Fulmer (Betsy) Erin W. Yarbro (Chris) Natalie Wessinger Lisa Wessinger Harrison Wessinger Callie Wessinger Thomas Griffin (Jennifer) Ashlyn G. Ancone (Keith) and Spencer Griffin; sixteen great grandchildren one great great grandchild; siblings: Wendell Wessinger (Earlene) Dorothy Chapman Heyward Wessinger (Doris) and Judy Swygert (John Carroll); and sisters-in-law Rosemarie Wessinger and Betty Wessinger. In addition to his parents and wife he was predeceased by brothers and their spouses Harold Jennings Carl (Annie Mae) and Elmer (Edith) Wessinger and a brother-in-law Harold Hack Chapman. . Pallbearers were grandsons Rusty Fulmer Scott Wessinger Thomas Griffin Harrison Wessinger Mitchell Fulmer Ronnie Wessinger Spencer Griffin Stephen Wessinger and Wesley Fulmer. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Lisa Wessinger Callie Wessinger Ashlyn Ancone Erin Yarbro and Natalie Wessinger. Memorials are suggested to Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church 101 East Boundary Street Chapin SC 29036. The family expresses their special thanks to the staff of Generations and the Heritage at Lowman and to Amanda with Lutheran Hospice for their loving care of Mr. Wessinger.
