Gerard "Jerry" R. Coffey, age 71, died Sunday, December 12, 2021 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 4, 1950 in Charleston, West Virginia, he was a son of the late James P. and Helen Tippman Coffey.
Jerry was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and served in the Navy on the USS Bordelon for four years. He attended St. Marks's Catholic Church.
In 1991, he moved from Clinton to Newberry and became Director of the Newberry County Family YMCA. He saw the YMCA through a time of significant growth, including the construction of the new facility and pool.
He liked the simple things in life, such as fishing, going to the beach, and riding around town in his golf cart. Jerry enjoyed doing things for others, grilling chickens with his good friend, John Paul at Christmas and feeding students at Newberry College. More than anything, Jerry loved his family and found joy in spending time with his granddaughters and caring for his Down Syndrome brother, Bo, with whom he did everything together for 29 years.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Hunt Copley Coffey; sons, James Coffey (Julie) of Blythewood and Matthew Coffey of Newberry; granddaughters, Anna and Kate Coffey; siblings, Tom Coffey (Terry) of Rock Hill, Chris Angelos (Jimmy), Martin Coffey (Cathy) and Bridget Miller (Brian) all of Aiken; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Mary Wooten, Patty Williams, Tim Coffey, Matthew Dennis "Bo" Coffey, and John Pat Coffey.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Jose Hugo Ruiz Marentes on Friday, December 18, 2021 at 10 AM in Wiles Chapel at Newberry College. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 16th, from 6-7 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Newberry County YMCA.
