Obituary

Glenn Reed Adams Jr. 93 of 195 Golf View Road Newberry died March 31 2011 at his home. He was born on April 4 1917 in Carpentersville Illinois to the late Glenn Reed and Edna Caroline Ehlert Adams. His grandfather was one of the orphans in New York City that was transported on the Orphan Train to Chicago where he was adopted by a Doctor Adams and his wife. After graduating from Marquette University in 1939 he worked in promotions with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He also played with the Sheboygan Red Skins of the newly organized professional American Basketball Association. On April 3 1942 he began a 35 year career in U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service. Between 1942 and 1949 he served as a Border Patrol Agent at stations in Grand Forks North Dakota; Grand Marias New Mexico; and Kingsville Weslaco and McAllen Texas. He served in the Army Air Corp stationed in India from 1944 to 1946 and was a reserve officer from 1949 until 1955. From 1949-1960 he was an INS criminal investigator in Chicago. He also served short term duties in Munich and Hamburg Germany and in Jamaica. In 1960 Glenn transferred to the Miami office as an acting supervisor to become an Assistant District Director for Investigations. He retired from the INS in 1977 to pursue his passion for golf. He was a club champion in Pembroke Pines Florida. In 1984 he moved to Newberry where he enjoyed many years of golf and being near his children grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His community service included serving as President of the Newberry Rotary Club the Newberry AARP chapter the Newberry Ball Room Dance Club and the Newberry Chapter of NARFE. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Newberry. Mr. Adams is survived by his wife Elizabeth Woodruff Adams and her two children David Gary Wilson (Jennifer) of El Paso Texas; and Paul Woodruff Wilson of San Francisco California and his brother Donald Carl Adams (Peggy) of Sea Cliff Long Island New York. Glenn was first married to Cassie Jean Holbert who predeceased him in death in 1992. He is survived by their two children: Dr. Cynthia Adams Downs (Frank) of Newberry and Glenn Reed Adams III of Newberry; Surviving grandchildren are Gregory Glenn Downs (Randa) of Irmo Jennifer Adams Downs McCullough (Mac) of Newberry Jonathan Robson Downs (Hayli) of Silverstreet and Stephanie Nicole Adams of Florrissent Missouri. Great grandchildren are Cassie Amanda McCullough Andrew Paul McCullough Alexander Gregory Downs Aeryn Lila Downs Arya Jane Downs Marcus L. Dixon and Connor Franklin Wilson. Glenn was predeceased by granddaughter Amanda Catherine Downs. Funeral services were held on Sunday April 3 2011 at 3:30 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Karen Radcliffe and the Rev. Dr. Mitchell Van Metre. Entombment with military honors was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family did receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church Window Fund P.O.
