IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gloria H.
Freeman
April 14, 1948 – May 11, 2025
Gloria Freeman, of Chapin, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went home to be with her Lord on May 11, 2025, at JF Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry, South Carolina at the age of 77.
Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, on April 14, 1948, she was a daughter of the late Furman T. and Iva Lee Lyles Hance.
Gloria was a beacon of joy and kindness whose love and compassion left an indelible mark on all who knew her. A dedicated secretary for much of her career, Gloria worked both for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and the Forestry Commission. She was dedicated to her work and loved by her co-workers.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Gloria was a woman of diverse interests and talents. She loved music of all kinds and taught herself to play the piano, often filling her home with the sound of hymns and gospel songs. She also enjoyed 50s and 80s pop music and would find joy in playing music and dancing.
Sewing was another of Gloria's passions, and she created beautiful clothing for her daughter, Wendi, amongst other things. She was also an incredible cook, with arguably the best cube steak around. Gloria also found joy in the game of tennis, a passion she shared with her son, Jamie. Gloria loved shopping trips, and most often had Jamie and Wendi with her when they were growing up.
Gloria's life was enriched by the love and companionship of her husband, James "Doug" D. Freeman, Sr. Their 54-year marriage began with a chance sighting of a beautiful girl by a young man at University of South Carolina Lancaster Extension and grew into a lifetime of shared joy, deep love, and family legacy.
In addition to her husband Doug, Gloria is survived by her daughter, Wendi Freeman of Chapin; son, James "Jamie" (Melissa) D. Freeman, Jr of Prosperity; grandchildren, Bristol, Easton, and Gavin Freeman; a sister, Judy (David) Edmonds of Anderson, SC; a brother, Danny (Sharon) Hance of Irmo, SC; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
