Gloria Palladini Nelson, 94, of Newberry, died Sunday, November 28, 2021 at her home surrounded by family.
She was born on November 11, 1927 in Columbia, SC, the daughter of the late Eugene and Lena Bernasconi Palladini.
Gloria began her career as a secretary in the law offices of Pope and Schumpert and later worked at the Newberry Observer. She retired after working at Newberry College for 27 years. After "failing retirement" (her words), she worked in the box office at the Newberry Opera House for several years.
She was an active member of The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer where she was a member of The Gathering Sunday School Class and the Women of the ELCA. She volunteered countless hours in the church office and the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and she was a faithful and loyal member of the Senior Choir.
In addition to her activities at church, Gloria was active in her community. She volunteered at the Newberry Opera House and Newberry County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Newberry College Women's League and served as treasurer for 20+ years and in 2009, Gloria was awarded the Noah and Pansy Derrick Outstanding Non-Alumna Award by the Newberry College Alumni Association.
When she wasn't working or volunteering, she was often found humming, singing, playing card games, watching the Atlanta Braves baseball games, or watching The Game Show Network.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Bowers; sons, Rick Nelson and Larry Nelson (B.J.); grandchildren, Michael Lawrence "Nick" Nelson, Jr., Matthew Bowers, Benjamin Bowers, and Lauren Nelson Sheorn (Bradley). She is also survived by special friends Cathy Derrick Shealy and Jamie Adams.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, George C. Nelson, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Beth Pearce Nelson.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Matthew Titus at 3:00 PM, Friday, December 3, 2021 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry and again prior to the service Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer.
