Obituary

Senior Enlisted Advisor and Command Chief Master Sergeant Ret. Hanes A. McEntire 81 of Irmo died Tuesday December 3 2013 at his residence. Born on December 26 1931 he was a son of the late Barney B. McEntire Sr. and Lessie Younginer McEntire. Funeral services were conducted Friday December 6 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Lake Murray Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ben Sloan. Interment with military honors did follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery Pomaria SC. He and Betty were married at the St. Pauls Lutheran Church over 60 years ago. Visitation was from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home 939 Chapin Rd. Chapin. He was a graduate of Irmo High School and attended Clemson University before beginning his military career with the U.S. Air Force on September 16 1950. Following his service in the US Air Force Chief McEntire was stationed at McEntire Air National Guard Base Eastover S.C. and served dual roles of civilian service and military employee until his retirement on June 30 1990. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant Civil Engineering in the S.C. Air National Guard. Chief McEntire was the first ever Senior Enlisted Advisor (Command Chief) to be voted into position by his peers. He served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the S.C. Air National Guard. During his long and dedicated military career The Chief completed overseas assignments during the Berlin Crises and Korean Conflict and also served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and other military contingencies and Operations. As a distinguished member of the armed forces he received many medals of service and recognition for his dedication and leadership. After retiring from his first career love service to his country he began a second career. Known as a master craftsman and builder by many Chief McEntire owned and operated B&H Builders for 10 years. He was a member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church. His love of country fulfilled him with great joy in having served God family peers and friends. Chief McEntire was an active golfer and former member of the Mid-Carolina Country Club where he pursued his passion of golf with the Senior Group. He was an umpire with the SC Football Association and a member of the High School Referee Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Betty Allen McEntire; children Renee McEntire McGinnis of Chapin and Bartley Hanes McEntire and his wife Lisa S. McEntire of Lexington; brother John Thomas McEntire; sister-in-law Judy Meetze (Melvin); and several loving nieces and nephews. He is the proud and loving grandfather to four grandchildren Melissa Renee Rector Matthew Roy McGinnis (Monica) of Haughton LA Marci Taylen McEntire and Morgan Hanes McEntire; and two great grandchildren Hannah Renee Rector and Matthew Roy McGinnis Jr. He was a friend and father figure to many outside of his immediate family. Through his warm heart and open arms he established a long lasting love and friendship with his grandchildren and friends. These strong bonds of family guidance and friendship caused him to be affectionately referred to as Pa by all.
