Obituary

Harriet Bowen Burnette 97 widow of E. W. Red Burnette died Tuesday March 10 2015 at Springfield Place in Newberry. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the home of Eleanor and Bill Sommerville 1937 McHardy Street in Newberry. Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 14 2015 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Tresco Shannon and the Rev. Karen Radcliffe. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Born on November 9 1917 in Antreville SC she was the daughter of the late Wayman J. Bowen and Juanita Nita Pennell Bowen. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church as long as she was able. Mrs. Burnette retired from Newberry County School System as an elementary school teacher. She was a dedicated teacher who genuinely cared about and loved all of her students. Harriet and her husband Red were avid bridge players. Harriet enjoyed walking often as much as five miles a day and would be seen walking all over Newberry. Most significantly Mrs. Burnette loved her family and was an excellent grandmother who adored her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Eleanor and Bill Sommerville of Newberry and Rita and Mike Heath of Brunswick GA; grandchildren Brett Sommerville Meg S. Porterfield (Burke) and Matthew Heath (Cristy); great grandchildren Nathan Porterfield Sterling Porterfield and Townes Heath and a special remembered cousin Helen P. Thomasson. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a grandson Michael Heath and a brother Sterling J. Bowen. Memorials are suggested to E. W.
