Helen Bridgers Parker Smith died July 30 2012 at the Presbyterian Community of South Carolina in Lexington SC. Born on September 5 1914 in Jackson NC she was the daughter of the late Dr. Carl Putnam and Bertha Joyner Parker of Seaboard NC. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence McKittrick Smith whom she married on March 22 1947. She and her husband were residents of Newberry SC for 43 years. The family did receive friends from 5:30 7:00 PM on Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday August 4 2012 at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church. Interment service did follow at 1:30 PM at Bush River Baptist Church Cemetery. Helen earned an A. B. degree from Duke University in 1935 and a Master of Social Service degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1940. She also studied at Smith College School of Social Work and the New York School of Social Work. She worked as a medical social worker at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital from 1940-47 and in the D. C. Health Department from 1947-49. She was a charter member of the National Association of Social Workers and a member of the Central Chapter of Social Workers Columbia SC. She was active in scouting serving as a Cub Scout den mother a Girl Scout leader troop organizer and as a member of the Board of the Congaree Girl Scout Council. A faithful member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church in Newberry SC Helen served as a circle leader and in 1985 was awarded an honorary life membership by the Women of the Church at Aveleigh. She was also an associate member of Providence Presbyterian Church in West Columbia SC. She served as president of the Womens Club of Newberry and of the Newberry Chapter of the AAUW. She was also treasurer of the Jasper Chapter DAR and a member of the Kenelm Winslow Chapter of the SC Society Colonial Dames XVII Century. She was active in the Newberry County Historical Society and the Civic League of Newberry. Survivors include her children: Caroline Smith Head (David) of Midlothian VA and James William McKittrick Jim Smith (Pam Troutman) of Raleigh NC; grandchildren: Elizabeth Caroline Head Michael McKittrick Head Susan Elaine Head all of Midlothian VA; sisters-in-law: Martha Parker Seneca SC and Margaret Parker Salisbury NC. There are also a number of nieces nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by two brothers and a sister: Carl Putnam Parker Jr. of Salisbury NC Marshall Joyner Parker of Seneca SC and Constance Parker Thomas of Raleigh NC.
