Helen Clary Smith 102 of 3903 Bush River Road Kinards widow of John Earle Smith Sr. died Sunday January 9 2005 at the family home.Mrs. Smith was born on June 23 1902 in Newberry County the daughter of the late John Vernon and Jessie Boozer Clary. She was a member of the Bush River Baptist Church of the choir the teacher of the Martha Franks Sunday School Class for over 50 years and she was active in Women's Missionary Union on the state regional and local levels. She was a 1922 graduate of Erskine College a member of the Bush River Friendship Club the Nosegay Garden Club and the Newberry-Saluda South Carolina and American Red Rose Societies. She was also a substitute teacher at Bush River High School from the time it opened to the time it closed.Mrs. Smith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John Earle and Dannette W. Smith of Kinards; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law William Bryan and Donna W. Smith of Kinards; and a great grandson Drew William Smith of Kinards. She was predeceased by a daughter Josephine Smith and a grandson Steven Earle Smith.Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P. M. Tuesday at the Bush River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Mosteller.
