Obituary

Helen Duncan Smith 72 died on June 29 2015 at the Heritage at Lowman. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday July 4 2015 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Newberry SC by the Rev. Matt Titus Rev. Herman Yoos and Rev. Ron Brown. Interment will be at Effingham Memorial Gardens Springfield GA. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. She was born on October 29 1942 in Charleston SC the daughter of the late Lester E. Duncan Sr. and Louise Schaack Duncan. Helen graduated in 1960 from Chicora High School in Charleston Heights SC and from Winthrop University in 1964. She received both her Master of Education degree and Education Specialist degree from Georgia Southern University. Mrs. Smith taught school at Lexington High School N. Charleston High School Winnsboro High School and Springfield Elementary School where she served as the lead teacher. She also served as assistant principal at Effingham County Middle School and at Mid-Carolina Middle School. She shared her love for music through voice organ and piano. Helen sang with the Savannah Symphony Chorale in Savannah GA for 18 years the Community Chorale in Hendersonville TN and the Newberry Community Choir. She served as church organist for St. Andrews Plains GA; Christ in Cullman AL; Holy Trinity in Springfield GA; Memorial Lutheran Church Nashville TN; Bethany and Summer Memorial both in Newberry SC. She also enjoyed being a member of the choir and the Redeemer Ringers at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 50 plus years Rev. Ronald G. Smith; sons R. Glenn Smith Jr. (Marti) Mark Smith (Melissa Miranda) Stephen Smith (Bonnie) and Eric Smith; grandchildren Skylar Dallas Scout Zachary Victoria Alex and Derick; brothers Lester Duncan (Marcia) and Charles Duncan (Jo); and sister-in-law Linda Proffitt (Edwin). In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother Paul Duncan. The family suggests memorials to S.C. Lutheran Retreat Centers 6053 Two Notch Rd.
