Helen Margaret Stinebaugh Snelling, 96, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 5, 1922 in Princeton, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer and Ava Stinebaugh.
She graduated from Princeton High School and Kansas State College. She earned her Master Degree of Nursing from the University of Kansas School Of Medicine.
She first worked as a nurse at Winter Veterans Hospital in Topeka, Kansas before becoming a homemaker for many years. She returned to nursing in 1972 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital where she worked until her retirement at age 75. She loved mentoring young nurses and caring for her patients evidenced by countless thank you notes from those whose lives she touched.
After her retirement, Helen volunteered as a nurse at the Free Medical Clinic and the Newberry County Food Pantry. She also served on the Newberry County American Red Cross Advisory Board.
Helen was a strong supporter of the Girl Scouts having served as troop leader for her daughters and other leadership roles long after their graduations. She was awarded the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Appreciation Pin for her dedicated and unselfish service to Girl Scouting.
She was a faithful member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she was elected to the vestry at age 80.
Her gift of a green thumb is legendary. Helen was a voracious reader who loved to travel, play bridge and never stop learning. Her favorite past time was walking which she continued daily until her passing. She especially loved her family, her pets and God.
Helen will always be remembered for her positive "can do" attitude.
She was married to William Smith Snelling on March 18, 1949. Mr. Snelling preceded her in death on February 3, 1978.
She is survived by her daughters Susan Harris, Birmingham, Al; Ann Gluse (Eric), Columbia, S.C., two sons, William Snelling(Debbie), Columbia, S.C.; Howard Snelling(Britt), Fort Mill, S.C., seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, brothers Ted, Gene and James Stinebaugh and sisters, Jane Kissinger and Barbara Symns also preceded her in death.
Her family expresses their deep appreciation to the staff at Springfield Place, Newberry and the staff of Jane Bruce at Still Hopes as well as Heartstrings Hospice for their loving care.
Services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Newberry, SC with the Very Reverend Elizabeth Morgan officiating on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 11 a.m.
The family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday prior to the funeral service at Whitaker Funeral Home., 1704 College St., Newberry, SC 29108.
