Obituary

Helen Parrott Whitaker 92 of 2103 Main Street and Springfield Place in Newberry died Saturday October 15 2011 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on July 13 1919 in Pomaria she was a daughter of the late Laura Suber and John W. Parrott. She was a graduate of Pomaria High School and a 1940 graduate of Newberry College where she was a member of the Newberry College Singers. Mrs. Whitaker was a former school teacher and actively participated as a grade mother and in other volunteer capacities during her childrens school years. She was secretary-treasurer of Whitaker Floor Coverings Inc. She was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Ezell Bible Class where she had served as pianist. She was also a member of Circle 1 and had served on numerous church committees. A charter member of the Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club she enjoyed her more than fifty year membership. She was also a member of the Newberry Fire Department Womens Auxiliary and a past member of the Newberry Civitan Club. Helen Whitakers kitchen was always open and family friends and business associates enjoyed many meals around her table. She was married to Paul Walker Whitaker for 55 years who predeceased her in 1999. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands Paulette and Jack Whitesides and Mary Helen and Bob Dawkins all of Newberry; her son and his wife John Paul and Cynthia Whitaker of Newberry; grandchildren and spouses Michael and Carlette Whitesides Doug Whitesides Kevin and Brandy Whitesides Benji and Heather Dawkins Heather and Neil Stalker Allison and Brian Jasinski Elizabeth and Troy Capps Laura and Grier Mangum and Mary Frances Whitaker and fianc Vince Northcutt; ten great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her loving sister Louanna Parrott Ringer. The family was at her home 2103 Main St. and did invite family and friends to visit between 12:00 noon and 6:00 P.M. on Sunday. Funeral services were conducted on Monday October 17 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Karen Radcliff and the Rev. Michael Whitesides. Burial did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Thomas Ringer III Keith Ringer Steve Graves Dr. James Williams Doggett Whitaker Phil Spotts John Glover Mark Walker David Glover and Rhett Corley Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Ezell Bible Class. The family suggests memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church Stain Glass Fund PO Box 67 Newberry SC 29108. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the residents and staff of Springfield Place to the staff of Newberry County Memorial Hospital and to Dr. Mark Davis for their care and concern.
