Henry L. Parr 79 of Newberry died Saturday February 7 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Parr was born in Newberry County on September 2 1924 a son of the late Callie Boyd and Mary Nance Parr. He graduated from Clemson College with high honors in 1947. He interrupted his college education on December 8 1942 to join the US Air Force and became a B-24 pilot during World War II. Mr. Parr founded Headspring Farm in Newberry County in 1950 and led the dairy farming operations of the farm for 45 years assisted by his sons Boyd and Calhoun for over 20 years. During the 1960's and 1970's his Jersey herd was the top producing Jersey herd of over 200 cows in the nation. He led the development of growing alfalfa in upstate South Carolina.In 1959 he was named the outstanding South Carolina Young Farmer of the year. The Progressive Farmer Magazine recognized him and his family as a Master Farm Family in 1968. His other dairy farm honors include the South Carolina Dairy Leadership Award the South Carolina Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Master Breeder Award and the South Carolina Jersey Cattle Club's Honors award. He was an active member of the South Carolina Farm Bureau serving as a state director for 32 years a member of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association Board the Chairman of the Farm Bureau Land Use Committee and the Farm Bureau Dairy Executive Committee as well as president and board member of the Newberry County Farm Bureau. He was a charter member of the Bush River Young Farmers.Mr. Parr was a life long member of the Newberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon and for 35 years as a teacher of the Olin Cannon Bible Class.Mr. Parr is survived by his wife of 56 years Mittie Bryan Parr a daughter and son-in-law Mary Parr Whitesides and Dr. Daniel Whitesides of Charlotte NC; three sons and daughters-in-law Henry L. Parr Jr. and Lillian Webb Parr of Greenville and Dr. Boyd H. Parr and Cheryl Brubaker Parr and Calhoun B. Parr and Louise Davis Parr all of Newberry; and grandchildren Mary Boyd and Daniel Bennett Whitesides of Charlotte NC; Henry Lakin and Elizabeth Givens Parr of Greenville; Bryan Henry Parr of Arlington VA; Jonathan Boyd Ruth Virginia and Timothy Allen Parr of Newberry ; and Leona Elizabeth and Mittie Elaine Parr also of Newberry; and one brother David Boyd Parr of Newberry. He was predeceased by three brothers Callie Boyd Parr Jr. James Nance Parr and William Wilson Parr. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry.Funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 A.M.
