IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert "Hub" J.
Lindler
August 15, 1930 – October 2, 2023
Herbert "Hub" Julian Lindler, aged 93, husband of Cathryn Riddle Lindler for 72 years, died at his residence on Monday, October 2, 2023. Mr. Lindler was born August 15, 1930. He was the youngest of nine children born to Andrew Pearson Lindler and Catherine "Katie" Cannon Lindler. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
He was educated in the Chapin public school system and graduated from Chapin High School where he was a member of the first football team in Chapin High history.
Hub joined the United States Army a few days after his 21st birthday and fought in the Korean Conflict. During the conflict, he lost his left leg and his right leg was severely injured. He earned a Purple Heart for his injuries. Hub was a very determined individual and did not let the loss of his leg stop him from supporting his family or doing anything he wanted to do.
After Hub was honorably discharged from the Army, he managed the Esso Service Station in Station. He then attended the South Carolina Trade School on the G. I. Bill where he learned radio and TV repair. He had a successful radio and TV repair service, "Lindler's Radio and TV Repair" for many years. He then joined the Chapin Post Office, first working as a clerk and later serving as a Rural Letter Carrier. He retired from the postal service after 20 years.
Hub was an active member of the Chapin Community. He was a devoted member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church for most of his adult life where he served on the church council and was a member of the Lutheran Men. He was the only mortgage signee who had the privilege of living to see the mortgage burned from the "new" church that was built in 1963. He was a charter member of the Chapin Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 15 years, a Charter Member of American Legion Post 193, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was inducted into the Chapin Hall of Fame in 2017.
Hub enjoyed taking care of his animals, hunting, and fishing. He was a baseball fan and supported the Chapin Town Team every weekend before the team disbanded, and loved the Atlanta Braves. During his younger years, he helped coached Little League baseball. One of his favorite past times was viewing sports on TV during his later years. He was a South Carolina fan for many years, but eventually switched loyalties when his grandchildren began to attend Clemson University.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Cathryn "Cat" Lindler; daughters, Juleen (Eddie) Stuck, Vicky (Derald) Edwards; grandsons, Jason (Stephanie) Stuck, Aaron (Allison) Stuck, Matthew ( Jessie) Edwards; great grandchildren, Braydon Stuck, Audrey Cate Stuck, Iris Edwards, Simon Edwards, and Lochlainn Edwards.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, 101 E. Boundary Street, Chapin, SC 29036 with Pastor Pat Riddle officiating. Interment will take place at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church Cemetery following the services. Family will receive friends and guests at the cemetery after the interment.
The family would like to thank all individuals involved in Hub's care during the past few years and especially during the last few weeks.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church in memory of Hub.
