Herbert Lee Gilliam 70 of 236 Bedford Way Prosperity SC formerly of Newberry died at Lexington Medical Center Tuesday September 13 2005.Mr. Gilliam was born in Newberry a son of the late Lonnie B. and Ora Lee Bridges Gilliam. He was a member of the S. C. National Guard for 23 years and a member of the 246 Army Band. He was a retired high school band director. While at McDuffie High School in Anderson the school marching band under his direction won over 50 1St Place Trophies and was invited on three occasions to participate in the Mardi Gras Parade.Mr. Gilliam was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church the Neal Truesdall Sunday School Class Amity Masonic Lodge # 87 the S. C. Music Educators Association the S.C. Retired Teachers Association a member and Past Patron of the Newberry Chapter No. 226 Order of the Eastern Star.Mr. Gilliam is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law Bobby A. and Maree H. Gilliam of Lexington and Ralph and Barbara M. Gilliam of Alpharetta GA. He was predeceased by a sister Doris Jean Armfield and a brother Willie Robert Gilliam.Funeral services were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Day. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.Visitation was Friday from to 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.Memorials may be made to the Newberry Chapter No. 226 Order of the Eastern Star c/o Jim Perry 2110 Adelaide St. Newberry SC 29108.Active pallbearers were Al Armfield Rev. Dick Weber Bill Armfield Jr. Vernon Force Jim Perry and Jack Innitelli.
