Hiram Stipe Mersereau, Jr., 77, of Newberry died Sunday, August 20, 2017 at J F Hawkins Nursing Home.
Born on April 27, 1940 in Portland, Oregon, he was a son of the late Hiram S. Mersereau, Sr. and Margaret Daggett Mersereau. Hiram was a graduate of Washington and Lee University. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U S Army and was a member of the Army's elite paratroopers.
He worked with Georgia Pacific for thirty years, retiring from the Prosperity location as the Plant Superintendent. Hiram enjoyed his time with Georgia Pacific and valued the employees and the working environment.
He was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church where he previously served as a Deacon and as an Elder. He was also a member of the Spirit of Aveleigh Sunday School Class.
While much of Hiram's life revolved around his work, he found time to enjoy fishing and traveling and was also a voracious reader. He served as a former member of the Board of Directors for the YMCA.
Hiram is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith Garretson Mersereau; sons, Timothy Hiram Mersereau and his wife Julie of Southern Pines, NC and Adam Garretson Mersereau and his wife Kristin of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.; grandchildren, Richard Hiram Mersereau, Ashley Margaret Mersereau, Emma Margaret Mersereau and Mary Delissa Mersereau; brothers, Timothy Daggett Mersereau (Nancy) of Monroe, GA and John Bradford Mersereau (Patricia) of Canton, GA; brother-in-law, James E. Garretson (Debbie) of Memphis, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 25, 2017 from 6:00 until 7:00 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry, SC.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Mitchell Van Metre.
Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
