Obituary

Houston "Bill" W. Long, age 82, of Newberry, died Thursday, October 12, 2023 at White Oak Manor.

Born June 23, 1941 in Newberry, he was the son of the late H. Wilson and Mary Ruth Hughes Long.

Bill was a good man and a hard worker. As a supervisor in the textile industry, he put in extra hours to provide for his family. He had a great sense of humor, and combined with being very outspoken, he was sure to make you laugh or possibly blush with his stories and comments. Bill enjoyed history and was knowledgeable on the history of Newberry. He also enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas, gambling and playing slot machines. He is loved and missed.

He is survived by his son, James "Jim" Houston Long (Carly) of Fountain Inn; grandsons Maddox, Brody, and Zachary Long; a sister, Mary Susan Mazza (Kenneth "Kenny") of Newberry; a niece, Jennifer Alewine (Tim) of Pomaria; and his trusted good friend Lamont Glasgow.

The family will receive friends at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children - Greenville.

Memories and messages of condolence may be shared with the family here on his tribute wall.

Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the Long family.
