Obituary

Howard Hugh Turner, Sr., 79, of Newberry died Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at his residence. Born on August 3, 1942 in Newberry, he was the son of the late Howard F. and Ruby Lee Livingston Turner. Hugh was Drum Major of the Newberry High School Marching Band and played trumpet in the Pep Band at Clemson University. He joined the South Carolina Army National Guard where he retired as Sergeant Major after serving for 25 years. During his service he received both the Outstanding Soldier Award and the nickname "Top" for his long tenure as 1st Sergeant. Hugh was an active member of his community. As operator of Turner Jewelers of Newberry, which was started by his grandfather in 1912, he played a vital role in the downtown economic development. In 1967, Hugh received the Outstanding Young Man of Newberry award and in 1989, he was recognized for his outstanding leadership by the Newberry Jaycees. He was a member of the Newberry Rotary Club and served as President of the Newberry Downtown Development Association. Hugh also served as President of the South Carolina Jeweler's Association from 1995 to 1996. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Taking advantage of every opportunity to get on the course, Hugh loved to golf. After retirement, he and Linda enjoyed traveling, including 32 countries. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, strength, faith, and love. Hugh is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Polson Turner; sons, Michael Turner and Brandon Turner (Jaimee) both of Newberry; daughter-in-law, Cari H. Turner of Ninety-Six; grandchildren, Justin Turner, Shelby Turner, Amber Turner, and Dean Turner; step-grandchildren, Jordan, Caden and Kris; and two great-grandchildren, Kyler and Waylyn. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Howard Hugh "Chip" Turner, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Long at 11 AM Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Central United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. Pallbearers will be Chuck Kolb, Randy Moore, Jay Polson, Eric Nolting, Justin Turner, Les Hipp, and Aaron Brooks. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Newberry High School Class of 1960.
