Hubert Roy Mills, Jr., 74, of Newberry died Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at MUSC Health Columbia Hospital.
Born on June 15, 1947 in Newberry, SC, he was a son of the late Hubert Roy, Sr. and Ruby Bedenbaugh Mills.
Roy retired after 20 years as the Transportation Coordinator from the Newberry County School District. Prior to that, he worked for 16 years with ISE America.
He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, served on church council and numerous committees. He and his wife, Cindy, sponsored youth activities for many years.
Roy always loved being outdoors and remained an avid hunter and fisherman since childhood. He loved sports and he especially enjoyed watching and coaching his boys in football and baseball. For more than 16 years, he coached the Newberry County Dixie Youth and Pony League baseball teams. He loved the beach and cooking and was famous for hosting 'deer stew socials.'
Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday; it was a time for him to give thanks for what he had and to share with others. Roy had a servant's heart and would do anything for anyone.
He adored his two grandsons and being their 'Papa' was a great joy. Anyone who knew Roy knew "he loved his family and he loved Redeemer." He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Roy is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Cynthia "Cindy" Payne Mills; sons, Hu Mills (Rachel) of Prosperity and Clif Mills of Newberry; grandsons, Noah and Mason Mills of Newberry; sister, Dotty Wilson (David) of Prosperity, brother-in-law, Jim Payne (Angie) of Rock Hill, sister-in-law, Lynn Siddle (Terry) of Irmo and Jeanne Koon of Columbia and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Ann Mills.
Memorial services for Roy will be conducted by the Rev. Matt Titus at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. The family will greet friends following the service at the church Family Life Center.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the love and support from the Prayer Card Group and WELCA group at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer for all the cards sent to brighten Roy's day. They also share their appreciation for the entire team at MUSC Health Columbia for their compassion and care not only to Roy but to the entire family.
