Obituary

Huey L. "Buck" Cockrell, 81, of Prosperity, died Monday, January 25, 2016 at Lexington Medical Center. Born on October 13, 1934 in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Baz Cockrell and the late Estelle Cockrell Lybrand. He was a member of Cross Point Church and was a Mason for over 50 years. Buck retired from law enforcement as a SLED agent. During his law enforcement career, he had also served as Newberry County Chief Deputy and as acting Sheriff of McCormick County in 1986-87. He was a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers' Association and the Newberry County Law Enforcement Association. Buck enjoyed being a part of the Saluda Monday Night Hot Supper Club. Cooking, joking with others and cutting hay, even when sick, were all fun events for him. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; Caroline Cook Cockrell; daughters, Harriet Christine "Tina" C. Brown (Terry) of Newberry and Cassandra "KC" C. Phibbs (Jimmie) of Prosperity; grandchildren, Brian J. LeCompte, Sr. (Seabron), Shannon L. Rulli (Nicholas), Brooke C. Phibbs (fiancé Joshua Pressley), Amy Brown Metts (Doug), and Nicholas Raymond Brown (Christy); great grandchildren, Kelsi Metts, Corbin Metts, Madison Epting, Camden Brown and Ames LeCompte; and a sister, Bobbie Cockrell Kyzer (Hamm) of Wilmington, NC. Other survivors include his closest friend, Wayne Achelpohl and a number of special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Paul Cockrell, Frances "Sambo" Cockrell, Eula Mae Shealy, Mamie Sue Hawkins and Sara C. Clamp. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 29, 2016 at O'Neal Street United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Jeff O'Dell and assisted by Chief Andrew Shealy. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:30 until 7:30 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Honorary pallbearers will be all former and present Law Enforcement personnel and also the members of the Intercessory Prayer Group.
