Obituary

Ida Huiet Satterwhite of Newberry died March 18 2014 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. A private family service was held at Rosemont Cemetery. Born on October 31 1919 in Saluda County she was the daughter of the late George David and Maude Etheridge Huiet. Mrs. Satterwhite graduated from Columbia High School and the University of South Carolina with a degree in chemistry. Prior to her marriage she worked at Fort Jackson and Walter Reed Hospital in Baltimore as a phlebotomist and lab technician. She then went to Japan after the end of World War II working for the US Army as a lab technician. It was at Fort Jackson that she met Irwin Matthews Satterwhite of Newberry and married him in 1949. She is survived by two daughters Derryll Satterwhite of Newberry and Susanne (Graham) Reich of Columbia; a sister Lillian H. Hopkins of Columbia; a granddaughter Tori (Mark) Tibshrany of Columbia; a great-grandson and many nieces nephews great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband she was predeceased by two sisters Annie Maude Epting of Saluda and Alice Thomas of Columbia; two brothers John Huiet of Columbia and Tom Huiet of Charlotte; and many family and friends who were dear to her. For many years she was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer the Jasper Chapter of the DAR the Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the UDC the Colonial Dames XVII the Huguenot Society of South Carolina and the Newberry Opera House Volunteers. She was a founding member of the Newberry County Historical and Museum Society and the Newberry Academy. Mrs. Satterwhite loved to play bridge plant and arrange flowers and cheer for her Gamecocks.
