Ingeborg “Inge” Sonja Fothe, 96, of Chapin, South Carolina, died peacefully Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Born on August 26, 1929, in the historic city of Dresden, Germany, she was the daughter to the late Wilhelm Rudolf Rentzsch and Wally Carola Wulff Rentzsch.

Inge met Herman, who was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany post World War II, fell in love and they were married. In 1953, she embarked on a new journey with Herman, moving to the United States and settling in New York. She was immensely proud of becoming an American citizen, a milestone that she celebrated with great pride.

For over 20 years, she served as a dedicated toll collector for the State of New York. Her commitment to her work and her friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path. After retiring, she and her beloved husband relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida where they enjoyed the amenities of the 55+ community, spending their days at the pool and club house.

Ingeborg had a passion for travel and cross-country trips with her family brought her immense joy. She also loved cruises which allowed her to explore new places alongside the company of her loved ones.

She lived a life filled with adventure, love, and cherished family moments. Ingeborg's life will be celebrated and remembered for her kindness, her adventurous spirit, and her unwavering love for her family and friends.

Ingeborg is survived by her husband, Herman Howard Fothe of Chapin, SC; her daughter, Sylvia Fothe Abate and her husband, Andrew; her grandchildren, Andrea Abate Diaz and her husband, Brett; Adam Abate and his fiancée Sarah Probst; and Steven Abate and his wife, Lexi. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside service times are pending at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
