Obituary

J. Samuel "Sam" Derrick, 83, of Little Mountain, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on December 1, 1932, he was a son of the late Lee Carroll and Louise Copeland Derrick. Sam graduated from Little Mountain High School, and in 1955 graduated from Newberry College. Following graduation, he was drafted into the US Army where he attained the rank of Sergeant, possessing a Top Secret clearance. He served in the Headquarters, Armed Forces Far East/Eight Army (known as the "Little Pentagon") located in the cities of Zama and Sagamihara, Japan. Following his military service, Sam re-established Derrick Lumber Company and was President of the company. He was a community man, formerly serving on Town Council and as a past Mayor of Little Mountain. He and his wife were instrumental in the successful completion of the J. Kess Derrick Community Health Clinic. They were also cited with a plaque in Brady Park for their service, leadership, dedication and generosity to the community and Town of Little Mountain, Little Mountain Reunion Association, Little Mountain Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad and Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Sam was a former member of the Little Mountain Fire Department, was Parade Chairman for the Reunion Association, brought the first water system to Little Mountain, served on the Newberry County Forestry Commission Board and helped organize the Newberry County Municipal Association. Always a history enthusiast, he was known as a local historian. Sam was an avid sports fan, supporting both Clemson University and Newberry College. He was also a former winning Little League baseball coach. He was a member and past Worshipful Master of the Little Mountain Masonic Lodge #281 and received his 60 year Master Mason pin in 2014. He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Newberry York Rite Bodies and the Order of the Eastern Star #276. In addition, he was a former member and past president of the Ruritan Club. Sam was a faithful lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served on Church Council, as Chair of the Cemetery Committee and numerous other committees. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Roxie Koon Derrick; children, Lou and Jim Barnes of Greenville and Roxie and Paul Moore of Prosperity; grandchildren, Jamie Barnes, Megan Barnes and her fiancé Neil Wilson, Betsy Barnes, Sam Moore and Matt Moore; sister-in-law, Bettie Derrick of Little Mountain; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by infant son, John Samuel Derrick, Jr.; daughter, Laurie Lee Derrick; brother, Louie C. Derrick and nephew, Alvin P. Derrick. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Brett Collins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 27 in the Trinity Life Center at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
