Obituary

J. Charles Floyd, Ph.D., age 80, of Chapin, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2023, at Agape Hospice House in Lexington, SC, where his family surrounded him with love during his final days.

Born May 1, 1943 in Conway, SC, he was a son of the late A.W. and Jeanwood Allen Floyd.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Biology in 1965, MS in 1968, and Ph.D. in 1981. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.

Charles was a born educator, having taught at secondary schools and colleges throughout his career in South Carolina, Mississippi, Kansas, and New Jersey. He especially enjoyed teaching Anatomy and Physiology to nursing and pre-med students.

He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Retiring back to South Carolina in 2004, he spent many years volunteering on the Marina Committee in the Night Harbor sub-division and playing tunes from his large music collection at neighborhood parties. Known as "Doc" by his students and many of his friends, he was known for his unique sense of humor and for always having the perfect story for any occasion. He loved to sail, play the guitar, and reminisce about his days of riding his Harley.

Charles was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Bertina Walsh Floyd; daughters, Jamie Pelchat (Teddy) of Chapin and Luci Whiteman (Casey) of Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren, Casey Grimes of Greenville, SC and Charlotte and Levi Whiteman of Scottsdale, AZ; brothers, Phil Floyd of Conway, SC and Aubrey Floyd of Boiling Springs, SC; several nieces and nephews; and a very special sister-in-law and close friend, Mary Haddox, who introduced him to the love of his life.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 3, 2023, 2:00 PM, at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, Chapin by the Rev. Doug Graul. The family will receive friends following in the parish hall.

The family expresses their sincere thanks and appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff of Agape Hospice House in Lexington.
