James Davis J.D. Cotney 92 formerly of Hollands Landing Road Prosperity SC died Thursday September 22 2011 at White Oak Manor. He was born on October 10 1918 in Prosperity SC to the late Napoleon and Florence Stockman Cotney. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Cotney was retired from Kendal Mills and Counts Sausage Company and was one of the last surviving members of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). He was a past member of the Prosperity Masonic Lodge #115 and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Cotney is survived by daughters Patricia C. (Billy) McDonald and Joan C. (Don) Moss all of Prosperity; sons Wako Cotney and Terry (Ann) Cotney all of Prosperity; 7 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife Thelma Bates Cotney a daughter-in-law Frances Cotney; sisters Virginia Shealy Etta Mae Dominick Ruby Huffstetler and Elizabeth Cohen; and brothers Nelson Virgil Lee Boyd Troy Ewell and Birtrun Cotney. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wako Cotney assisted by Rev. Scott Kierstead. Interment was in the church cemetery. The family was at the home of Patricia and Billy McDonald 219 Marina Way Prosperity and did receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Pallbearers were grandchildren Mark Cotney Ron Cotney William McDonald Jr. Michelle C. Russo Dale Moss David Moss and Jamie McDonald. Honorary pallbearers were great grandchildren.
