James E. Coats 88 of Newberry died Tuesday December 28 2010 at White Oak Manor. Born on October 2 1922 in North Carolina he was a son of the late James F. and Mildred Ryles Coats. Mr. Coats was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of the Kendall Company Oakland Plant. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Doris Clark Coats; daughter Nancy (Lewis) Lee of Newberry; sons Russell Rowe of Newberry and Bruce Rowe of Myrtle Beach SC; sisters Margaret Sheppard and Ruby Hughes both of Newberry; brothers Carl Coats of Clifton Forge VA Jack Coats of White Sulfur Springs WV Billy Mac Coats of Batesburg-Leesville and Dewey Coats of West Columbia; and a number of grandchildren great-grandchildren nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth Jones and a brother Clyde Coats. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard Dick Goldie and Lewis Lee. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 5:00 to 6:30 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry.
