James Lee Mills 85 of 282 ODell Road Newberry died Monday June 17 2013 at Providence Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday June 20 2013 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ed Miller and the Rev. Ray Ridgeway. Interment did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. He was born on June 9 1928 in Saluda County a son of the late Johnnie Lee Doc and Lillie Hipp Mills. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and retired from the SC Forestry Commission. James was a member of Faith Lutheran Church the Scotts Creek Kennel Rabbit Hunting Club and particularly enjoyed the time he spent with the members. He enjoyed many hunting activities as well as his gardening. His heart was his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Kathren Hawkins Mills; his son Freddie Neal (Joyce) of Newberry; grandchildren Brad Neal (Michele) Blake Neal and Lacey Neal; great granddaughter Amelia Neal; sisters Elizabeth Libby Longshore (Milton) of Prosperity Myra Hightower (Roscoe) of Aiken Joye Hawkins of Newberry and Jean Stencel (Dale) of Augusta GA; and brother Wyman Mills of Newberry. He was predeceased by his parents a sister Mary Nell Neal and brothers Carol Mills Derrill Mills and Wayne Mills. Active pallbearers were Johnny Nichols Jackie Swindler Ronnie Shealy Larry Higgenbothem Andrew Shealy and Sebert Sizemore. Honorary pallbearers were Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association Scotts Creek Kennel Rabbit Hunting Club Robert Cromer Butch Polk and Billy ODell.
