James Frank Long, 86, of Prosperity, died on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at his home in Stoney Hill.
A lifelong resident of Newberry County, he was born on April 12, 1931 to the late Annie Belle Chapman and Norman J. Long.
Frank served as a welder and blacksmith in the US Army, and was also a National Guard Reservist upon returning home.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and served on Church Council. As the "mayor of Stoney Hill" he was the youngest of ten men who contributed money to purchase the land to establish the Stoney Hill Community Center, and served on the Board of Directors.
Frank worked for many years in the lumber industry before becoming a full-time cattle, hog and crop farmer. He became a member of both the Newberry County and the Saluda County Cattlemen's Associations, and was adamant that no appointments be scheduled on Mondays so he could be at the Saluda cow sale. Regardless of the task, he was a hard worker every day of his life and will be remembered for teaching life skills.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Faye Langford Long; daughters, Elaine Long Bailey (Mark) of Huntingtown, MD, and Lydia Long Merchant (David) of Prosperity; grandchildren who affectionately called him "Bamp", Phillip Trotter II and Ingrid Trotter, both of Prosperity; an aunt Bernice Chapman Shealy of Newberry; a special niece, Cathy Meetze and special nephew, David Hentz; a number of other nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Cabella.
He was predeceased by brothers, William E. (Bill) Long, Thomas Jefferson Long, a sister, Clara Long Hentz, an infant brother and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 PM, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church by Rev. Jason Shafer, Rev. Art Hallman, and Vicar Cassie Macintosh. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.
