Jane Summer Ragland age 85 died July 25 2008 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Columbia.She was born on December 8 1922 in Newberry the daughter of the late John Harrison and Mamie Swittenberg Summer. Mrs. Ragland was an honor graduate of Newberry College a piano teacher and the author of numerous published poems and articles. She served on the Newberry Community Hall Commission and the Newberry Regional Library Board. She was co-founder with the late Mrs. Taddy Buddin of the Newberry Newcomers Club and she remained an advisor to this group for many years. In April 2001 both ladies were recognized by the Mayor and City Council of Newberry and the S.C. House of Representatives for 40 years of service. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.She is survived by her husband of 63 years Charles Emerson Ragland; children and spouses Charles E. Ragland Jr. of Selinsgrove PA John Harrison and Mary Helen Ragland of Piedmont Kathryn Ragland and Allan Gilbert of Hopkins Christopher R. and Julie Ragland of Fountain Inn; grandchildren Will Ragland Rebecca Ragland Marianne Gilbert Nicolau and husband Gilbert Nicolau David Gilbert Harrison Gilbert Ben Ragland Susannah Ragland and Christian Ragland; and one great-grandson Parker L. Nicolau. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services were conducted on Friday August 1 at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer 1515 Boundary St. Newberry by the Rev. Caldwell Day.
