Obituary

Jerry Anne Hoke Whitesides wife of Dr. Glenn Whitesides died on Wednesday August 27 2014 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. The family did receive friends at the Whitaker Funeral Home on Friday August 29 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A Funeral Service was held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Sunday August 31 at 2:00 PM conducted by the Rev. Richard Webber. The family did receive friends in the Redeemer Family Life Center following the service on Sunday with interment following the reception in Rosemont Cemetery. Born on February 18 1937 she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Swope Hoke of Chester and the daughter-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wright Melvin Whitesides of Chester. She graduated from Chester High School in 1955 and from Queens College Charlotte NC in 1959. At Queens she was president of the freshman class named to Valkyrie sophomore honorary served as president of the colleges Recreation Association during her senior year and was named to Whos Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. While at Queens she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She received her masters degree from Appalachian State University and completed additional graduate studies at the University of South Carolina Clemson University and Winthrop University. Following graduation from Queens with a B.S. degree in mathematics she worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Langley Field VA and later returned to Queens College as an Admissions Counselor. A retired educator of 34 years in the public schools of Hickory NC and Newberry SC she was a mathematics classroom teacher guidance counselor school psychologist and served for 17 years as Director of Special Services for the Newberry County Public School System. Active in local state regional and national associations she was a member of the Piedmont the South Carolina and the Greenwood Regional Associations of School Psychologists; the Council of Exceptional Children The South Carolina and the National Councils of Administrators Association; the Western Piedmont Education Consortium; and the Midlands Area Consortium. Mrs. Whitesides was active in the community. She was on the Founding Board of Advisors and served as secretary of the Newberry Adult Activity Center (now the Disability and Special Needs Board). She was on the Advisory Board of the Newberry Recreation Commission and was one of the founders of Camp Rainbow a day camp for disabled children in Newberry County. She was a volunteer for the South Carolina Guardian ad Litem program for Newberry County. She was a member of the Womans Club of Newberry the Literary Study Club the Newberry County Historical and Museum Society was an award-winning performer with the Newberry Community Theatre. A charter member of the Carolinian Society a member of the Newberry Opera House Guild and served as an Ambassador for the Newberry Opera House. While serving for a decade as the First Lady of Newberry College she served two terms as President of the Newberry College Faculty Womens Club was a life-time member of the Newberry Womens League and organized historic home tours to benefit the renovation of Smeltzer Hall the colleges oldest building. She and her husband and children took great pride in opening the Presidents Home to the college family and to the Newberry community during the ten years they resided there. During the colleges 150th year celebration Mrs. Whitesides received the Sesquicentennial Medal of Honor recognition. A member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer she served as a member of the Handbell Choir as a Lay Reader as a Sunday School Teacher and as a member of various committees including Staff Support and Stewardship. She was elected by the congregation to Church Council and served that group as secretary. She was an avid sports fanespecially of college basketball and football. Since a young girl she always loved horses especially of the Arabian breed having owned several during her lifetime. She loved to read she loved music and she loved to play cards and travel with her Bridge and Shanghai friends. She loved her children and her cherished grandchildren. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She will especially be remembered for her humor her friendship to many and her warmth and kindness to all she met. In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters and one son Jane Elizabeth Doolittle Newberry Anna Catherine Harris Knoxville TN and John Hampton Whitesides Newberry and a son-in-law Dr. Christopher Dale Harris Knoxville TN. She is also survived by five grandchildren John Cameron Doolittle Connor Edward Doolittle and Claire Elizabeth Doolittle all of Newberry and Emma Catherine Harris and Christopher Ethan Harris of Knoxville TN and by two step grand-daughters Laura Lee Harris and Susannah Harris both of Knoxville TN. She is also survived by two brothers and a sister in-law Robert Lee Hoke and Elizabeth Josey Hoke of Brandon MS and by Larry Swope Hoke of Anderson SC. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law Dorothy Whitesides Johns and her husband Rufus Wagner Johns Union SC and by a brother-in-law Thomas Wayne Whitesides Chester. She is survived by eight nieces and nephews and by a host of grand nieces and nephews cousins and friends.
