John "Bud" Wray Sweet, 86, of Ridgeland and formerly of Chapin, died on Wednesday, March 9, 2022.
Born on March 13, 1935 in Detroit, MI he was the son of the late George and Margaret Sweet.
Bud graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Tech University where he was a member of Sigma Rho fraternity.
He was married to the late Barbara Louise Budny Sweet (8/5/37-8/6/96) and had two sons, Robert (Judy, 7/11/53 - 3/13/2013) and Richard (Jill). The family moved to Columbia, SC in the early 70's and to Chapin in 1983.
He was a founding member of the Lake Murray Sailing Club (LMSC), where he spent countless hours teaching, learning, working, sailing, volunteering, laughing and loving life. He served several terms as Commodore of LMSC, was a US Sailing Judge, Commodore for the Southeast Yacht Racing Association, as well as Lake Murray Yacht Racing Association. He was even an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Yacht Race Committee.
Bud was smart, determined, stubborn, good at almost everything, generous with his time and talents, honest, funny and hard working. He loved an adventure, loved to tell a story, loved his Atlanta Braves, and loved his Gamecocks. But above all else, he loved his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean "Nana" Sweet, with whom he created a beautiful, blended family. Also surviving is his sister, Sandy Fry of London, Ontario; his sons, Robert Sweet and Richard (Jill) Sweet; stepsons, Peter (Ruth) Yeh, Alex Yeh, and John Yeh, and his beloved grandchildren, Barbie, Connor, Maggie Sweet and Anna, Daniel, Caleb Yeh had the privilege of calling him PopPop.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 PM on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Lake Murray Sailing Club, 235 Old Forge Rd., Chapin, SC. For those who wish to attend virtually, a livestream option will be available at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
