John Pickney Kelly, 74, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, SC. Born on April 2, 1944 in Newberry, he was a son of the late Roy M. and Cora Dominick Kelly. He was married to the late Pam Reed Kelly for 26 years. Mr. Kelly worked with Newberry County Public Works. His big heart, soft spoken manner and kindness to others made him loved and admired by many. Fishing on the lake, baseball and working the land with his tractor were among his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed working with his hands and weaving chair bottoms and baskets. John chose to be a loving and caring father and grandfather and he cherished the moments with all of them. He is survived by children, Susan Higgins and husband Gary and Derryl William "Will" Dixon and wife Rebecca all of Prosperity; siblings, Frank Kelly (Chris) of Lake Zurich, IL, Ruth Cannon (Jim) of Spartanburg, Ella Mae Till (Richard) of Columbia and Kate Sightler of Gaston; grandchildren, Hali Alexander (Robert), Elizabeth Higgins, Avee Higgins, Matthew Higgins and Peyton James and great grandchildren, Cole, Karoline and Kathryne Alexander. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by siblings, Earl Kelly and Grace Frick. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry conducted by the Rev. Mark Wilkes. Burial will follow the service at Soule Chapel United Methodist Church in Chappells. Visitation will be prior to the service from 2:00 until 2:30 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Justin Hartley, Thomas Frick, Gary Higgins, Scott Williams, Robert Alexander, Andrew Kegley and Brandon Crawford. Honorary Pallbearer will be Pate Waldrep.
