Obituary

John Russell Thompson, Sr., of Newberry, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his residence. Born on August 10, 1945 in Laurens, he was a son of the late John and Edna Weathers Thompson. John was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and Korean War. He worked as an EMT with the Newberry County EMS for many years, retiring as director. He loved his job and was very dedicated to it and the community. He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Laurens. John was known to many as an honest man who enjoyed traveling, fishing, and hunting. He is survived by his children, Sherry Cox (fiancé, Ronnie Redmond) of Clinton, John Thompson, Jr. of Gaffney, Michelle Thompson of Newberry, Andrew Mullinax of Anderson, and Erica( John ) Anastos of Mauldin; grandchildren, Allen Cox (Brailey), Brianna Evans, Brandon Evans, Nikki Craine, Chris Gallman (Ana), Dennis Byers, Justin Seay (Jasmine), Joshua Thompson, Cylas Anastos, Thai Mullinax, ,Abram Mullinax and Kaylynn Mullinax;; great-grandchildren, Daisy and Isaac Cox; siblings, Sue Swagsinger, Nettie Bell Gregory, and Gloria Jean Lamb; and his favorite children, his Jack Russell, Buddy, and Chihuahua, Edistone. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Grace Griffin and Joann Kennedy. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. Due to John's love for his four legged children, the family suggests memorials be made to the Newberry County Animal Care and Control, 11494 Hwy 34, Newberry, SC 29108.
