Joseph Lukas 94 of Seafarer Lane Batesburg South Carolina died Tuesday June 7 2011 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on September 28 1916 in Vienna Austria he was the son of the late Johann and Wilhelmina Bessendorfer Lukas. He was a veteran of WW II having served both in the Afrikakorps and on the Russian Front. He emigrated to Victoria British Columbia Canada in 1951 where he worked at the Victoria Golf Club for many years. In 1972 he moved to the United States and retired as the General Manager of the Shenandoah Club Roanoke Virginiain 1984. He then lived in Reston Virginia for a number of years before moving to Batesburg. He was an avid bridge player and achieved Life Master status while still living in Canada. Mr. Lukas is survived by two daughters Wilma Spikes of Batesburg and Helen Cayzer of Victoria British Columbia Canada; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
