Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Turkaly, 77, of Newberry died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at his residence. Born in McKeesport, PA on November 28, 1938, he was a son of the late Joseph J. Turkaly and Jean Abaray Turkaly. He was retired from the US Army after twenty one years of service. Following retirement from the military, he worked as a meat inspector for the State of SC. A member of St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, was on the Parish Council and was also a member of the Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus. Joe liked to garden, to cook, to eat and enjoyed a good glass of wine. Fishing on the pier at Myrtle Beach, deep sea fishing, watching birds in his backyard and collecting coo coo clocks were some of his favorite pastimes. Joe was very close to his Croatian grandfather who nurtured him and influenced his love of eating and cooking. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Polly Fogle Turkaly; daughters, Theresa Ruttan (Norm) of Everett, WA and Danielle Mari (Steve) of Newberry; siblings, James Turkaly (Ursula) of Durham, NC and Jeanette Straley (Richard) of Monroeville, PA; grandchildren, Anna Ruttan and Stephen Ruttan; and his dog, Tootie. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dog Lucy. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM Tuesday at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Interment will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The Rosary service will be recited at 5:30 PM on Monday with the visitation to follow from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
