Juanita Rae Carlton, 91, of Chapin, died Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Heritage at Lowman.
Born on October 25, 1925 in Poplarville, MS, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Ray James and Myrtis Stanford James.
She attended the University of South Carolina, earning a BS degree in Elementary Education and later a MA degree in Education Administration from Pepperdine University, CA. Her teaching career spanned almost 40 years and included teaching positions in elementary and middle schools as well as administrative positions in Newberry and Beaufort counties. After retiring in 1991, Juanita continued to serve as a substitute teacher at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC.
She was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be sorely missed.
Juanita is survived by her daughters, Lisa Carlton of Beaufort and Megan Brown of Chapin; sister, Barbara Smith of Orlando, FL; and numerous grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Richard O. Carlton, who died on August 2, 2016; son, Marc Carlton; daughter, Kathryn Sharpe Carpenter; infant son, Carlton; and several grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 6:00 until 7:00 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Chapin Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Phil Vaughn.
