Karen Keever Chasteen, 76, of Newberry, died Monday, May 23, 2022 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Vincennes, Indiana, Karen Chasteen started her exciting life as the daughter of an Army Air Corps pilot. After obtaining her education, Karen married and began her life serving others as an Air Force wife. She lived in several countries while deployed, but her favorite was Belgium.
Karen was an active member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church in Newberry and loved her mission work there. In her adopted hometown, Karen participated in the Opera Guild, Creative Arts Club, Newcomers Club, Literary Study Club, Presbyterian Women of Aveleigh Circle, and others. She also served on the session as an Elder and a Deacon at Aveleigh. Karen was awarded Newberry's Woman of the Year award in 2018.
In 2019, Karen was diagnosed with an aggressive leukemia requiring chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Thanks to Be the Match and DKMS, the bone marrow registries used to find her stem cell match, the treatments gave her another three years to enjoy her dear family and friends.
Karen is preceded in death by her loving husband, Col. Calvin "Cal" L. Chasteen and parents, Bernard V. and Betty M. Keever.
She is survived by her daughters, Heather Josey and Stephanie Josey (Jonathan) and stepchildren, Terise Rhodes (Jimmy) and Christopher Chasteen (Anne), as well as her siblings, Kassandra (Arthur), John (Maryanne), and Sue (Marc). Karen leaves behind many adoring grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
