Kathleen Withers, 94, died unexpectedly July 20, 2018. She was born in Warrior, AL April 8, 1924 and is predeceased by her parents, Henry Lester and Vera Attaway Mitchell, four siblings, Ruth Bibb, Lance Mitchell, Johnnie Perry, and Meriam Mitchell, and her loving husband, Raymond Withers. Her four children and their families survive her: Carol Martig (Al), Jenkinsville, SC; Janice Velez, Newberry, SC; Alan Withers (Debbie), Merritt Island, FL and Gary Withers (Susan), Laurens, SC; 13 grandchildren: Sean Bech, Harper Correa, Alison Velez, Anthony Velez, Jed Withers, Andrew Withers, Jessalyn Withers, Michael Sutherland, Kevin Sutherland, Tori Hendrix, DeAnne Brupbacher, Ray Withers and Lexie Withers; and 23 great grandchildren. The family expresses special gratitude to Mary Ida Turner (Mit) for Kathleen's care and companionship over the past two years. Kathleen's life was one of service to her family and to God. As a military wife of 30 years, she traveled throughout the United States and enjoyed a tour of duty in Japan. After retirement in 1972, she and Ray continued their love of travel throughout the US and overseas. Her volunteer life began as a nurse's aide in Birmingham, AL during World War II. She continued Red Cross volunteering until 1972 organizing projects for nursing homes and to aid orphans overseas. Kathleen embraced her favorite scripture, Matthew 28: 19-20, "Therefore go and make disciplines of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirt, and teaching them to obey all things I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age." As a result, beginning in 1975 and for 40 years, she managed the Church of Christ Oceanside's (Satellite Beach, FL) World Bible School correspondence ministry to thousands of students in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia, West Africa. Many of students called her "Mother." Visitation is Wednesday, July 25, 6-8 pm, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry SC with services on Thursday, 11:00 am at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her name to World Bible School, PO Box 2169, Cedar Park, TX 78630 or to your favorite charity. She will be buried at Bushnell National Cemetery in Florida with her husband of 68 years. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
