Kathryn Kat Holmes Hale 63 of 2005 College St. Newberry wife of James A. Hale Sr. died Sunday September 26 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Hale was born in Union on June 14 1947 a daughter of the late Henry C. and Polly Patterson Holmes Sr. She was a graduate of Laurens High School received her Bachelors degree from Erskine College and her Masters degree from Clemson University. She retired as a guidance counselor from Airport High School. Mrs. Hale was a member of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church where she was currently serving as the choir director. She was a former horticulturalist with the Riverbanks Zoo Society. Mrs. Hale was a member of the Sandlapper Singers and the Newberry Opera House Foundation. She is survived by her husband James A. Hale Sr.; step-children and their spouses Lyn and Bobby Grubbs of Lexington Elise and Mike Hoffman of Chapin and James A. Jr. and Vickie Hale of Lexington; sister Margaret Ann (Dennis) West of Enoree; brother Henry C. (JoeAnne) Holmes Jr.of Enoree; grandchildren Robert J. Grubbs Michael A. Grubbs Sara Beth Grubbs Sam Hale Matthew Hale and Caroline Hoffman; nieces and nephews Billy & Chris Clark of Laurens Ross and Marley Werner of Boiling Springs Garrett and Kristen Holmes of Graniteville C.J. West of Enoree Chris Tindal and Rebecca Holmes of Enoree; and a great-niece Anna Grace Clark of Laurens. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 PM Thursday at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church Columbia by the Rev. John Culp and the Rev Bob Borom. The family did receive friends following the service at the church activity center.
