Obituary

Kenneth E. Mostiler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Lexington Medical Center, with his family by his side. He was 85 years old.

Born on April 5, 1938, in Clifton, SC, he was the son of the late George Emmette and Pearl Johnson Mostiler. He grew up in the family home, where his proof of age came from the Family Bible. He joined the Navy as a young man and served for 10 years, traveling the world, and working in ordnance logistics. He was proud of his service and loved being on board ships. One of his fondest memories was visiting the USS Cassin Young, the ship he served on, and showing the docents some of its unique features. He received a special tour as a thank you for his service.

After an accident cut his Navy career short, he transitioned to the Civil Service, where he continued his work in ordnance logistics. He settled in Charleston, SC, where he met the love of his life, Linda L. Peterson. They married in 1966 and had two children, George and Ann. They were best friends and partners for 57 years.

Kenneth, or "Poppy" as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, enjoyed the simple things in life. He liked to relax in his recliner, watch a good ball game, and spend time with his family, who were his pride and joy. He was a kind and caring person who had never met a stranger. He had a warm smile, a profound sense of humor, and a wealth of stories to share. He made everyone feel welcome and connected.

He was also a man of deep and committed faith, and a member of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, where he and Linda attended regularly. He lived his faith through his actions and words and was a role model for his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his son, George Mostiler and his wife, Michelle; and grandson Kenny, his daughter, Ann Halliburton and her husband, Sean; his grandchildren, Brittany Bauman and her husband, Gary, Austin Halliburton, Hayden Halliburton, and his great-grandchildren, Emmett, and Elliott Bauman. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Billy and sister Rachel.

A funeral service honoring Poppy's life will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 1:00 pm at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in Chapin, officiated by the Rev. David Nuottila. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the medical staff at Lexington Medical Center Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit for their compassionate care of Poppy.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made to the American Legion Post 193 102 Lexington Ave, Chapin, SC 29036.

Memories and messages of condolence may be shared with the family here on his Tribute Wall.
